Nanning Bear Farm

Peace by Piece is Animals Asia's landmark campaign launched in April 2014 to help rescue and rehabilitate previously exploited moon bears in Nanning, China. These bears have been kept in horrendous conditions – many trapped in tiny cages from birth – and farmed for their bile.

The farm bred the bears and extracted their bile for years, but the General Manager had a change of heart when his daughter convinced him of the horrible cruelty of the trade. Animals Asia took over custody and care of the bears in April 2014, leasing the land and facilities.

This is the largest rescue of its kind in the world. We need YOUR HELP NOW to help around 125 bears go from farm to freedom.

We now need your help to turn this farm into a home – peace by piece!

Progress

When we took charge of the farm we immediately improved the bears' diet. Their daily regimen of corn gruel was replaced with a nourishing mix of fresh fruit and vegetables, dry dog food and plentiful access to water.

We also began emergency health-checks – removing immediate pain such as rotting and broken teeth. The difference has been amazing. Previously suffering and malnourished bears with just a thin covering of body hair have since filled out and their lackluster and sparse coats are growing back beautifully thick and glossy.

The introduction of enrichment items such as metal swimming pools, rubber kongs and bamboo feeder toys has been essential in our efforts to stimulate the bears and keep their minds and bodies busy, making the best of their physical environment until such time as we can begin building their outdoor enclosures and dens.

We have also made makeshift surgery rooms so we can accommodate ongoing health-checks. A medication preparation area has also been established, an office space is being developed and accommodation rooms have been allocated so that we will always have Animals Asia staff on site in Nanning.

We are committed to caring for the Nanning bears for the rest of their lives, which in the case of our youngest cub, Smudge, could be up to 35 years. It's a mammoth undertaking but, with your help, we can transform this place of suffering into a place of peace.

This isn't just a bear rescue, it's a landmark initiative to help change the hearts and minds of other farmers in the region, and will show the government and public that there IS a solution to bringing bear farming to an end.

Because of the size and scale of this rescue, we need your support more than ever before. Your donation will help fund the ongoing renovation of the farm as well as the veterinary care these bears urgently need and the equipment and structures needed for their rehabilitation.
