David
From a cupboard-sized cage to comfort and companionship
Likely snatched from the wild as a tiny cub, sun bear David spent the early part of his life trapped in a cage no bigger than a cupboard. Animals Asia rescued him and three other bears in 2008 from an illegal farm in Vietnam, and brought them home to our Tam Dao sanctuary. Frightened and confused, David arrived bearing the emotional scars of cruelty – but soon he showed us his true, radiant self.

Bright spirit, boundless love
Charming, playful and deeply affectionate, David soon blossomed. He quickly made friends – especially with Nelson, his wrestling partner for life. The two ‘brothers from other mothers’ became inseparable, rolling, tumbling, and snoozing side by side.
David also showed us a tender side. When shy new bears were integrated into the group, David was always first to welcome them, offering gentle reassurance – and often, a hug. As bear carer Hiep says, ‘David brightens everyone’s day. He helps new bears settle in, just by being his beautiful, sweet self.’
Bravery in the face of hardship
In 2022, David’s carers noticed something was wrong. Once exuberant and agile, he’d suddenly become lame. After much investigation and painful deliberation, there was only one option: his back left leg had to be amputated.
The operation was a success – and so was David’s recovery. Within eight weeks, he was back on his paws and wrestling with Nelson! His strength, resilience and joy astonished everyone. He showed us, once again, that love and spirit can overcome even the greatest odds.

Nest builder, love seeker
Today, David moves at his own sweet pace. He adores crafting the perfect nest – gathering leaves, straw and browse, and carefully arranging his basket into his own snug sanctuary. He huffs and puffs if things don’t go to plan, but eventually he settles in, curling up for a sunny afternoon snooze.
He’s also still full of fun. Whether chasing Mr. Dave and Nelson in a game, cuddling Dorle, or following his crush, Angel, around the enclosure with wide-eyed devotion, David keeps his carers smiling.
David today
David still struggles with his reduced mobility, but his carers do everything they can to make sure he’s comfortable and happy. Thanks to our kind supporters, he has everything he needs to thrive – at every stage of his life.
