Remembering our friend Dr Jane Goodall DBE

Everyone at Animals Asia is heartbroken to learn that our dear friend Dr Jane Goodall DBE has passed away.  Our thoughts are with her family and those closest to her, who have lost a dear and loving soul. A legendary scientist, primatologist, conservationist and changemaker, the world was blessed with her presence. Her passing is an immeasurable loss, but her legacy will be carried forward by the many millions of people who she inspired to learn about and protect the natural world.

Reflections from Jill Robinson

Jane was very close to Jill Robinson, our founder and CEO. Here Jill shares her personal reflections of her friend and champion:

‘The word “legend” is often given to those who neither earn nor deserve it.  Jane was a legend in every sense of the word.  I loved and admired her more than I can say and would attend all of her presentations if we were in the same location in the world.  She would hold the audience captive in her hands – from the youngest child to the highest government official, to scientists and conservationists, and everyone in between.

“I would sit mesmerised, often with tears running down my cheeks as she spoke about the indomitable spirit of humankind and the weight of responsibility we carry on our shoulders to protect the thing most precious in this world, life itself. Whether people or animals or plants, Jane preached love and kindness and our duty in healing our most beautiful, fragile earth.

“After one of her speeches I ventured over to say hello, holding a tiny plush moon bear in my hand to give as a “traveling bear” for luck.  Without a moment’s hesitation she began rummaging in her bag for several seconds until she triumphantly pulled out a little plastic chimpanzee as my good luck companion in return. I have never traveled without it since.

“Jane was my champion and my friend, who championed and helped our rescued moon bears for decades.

“I loved her with all my heart and thank the heavens for a woman who not only practiced what she preached but with such inspiration, conviction, and reason for hope………

“As we say to every bear at the end of their lives, rest in peace Jane, from your family who love you.”
