World Bear Day: why bears are extraordinary
On World Bear Day we’re taking the opportunity to celebrate one of our favourite animals in the world!
For decades, Animals Asia has been rescuing bears and helping them recover from traumatic pasts. In that time we’ve gotten to know them not only as a species, but also as the truly individual characters they are.
Learn about how bears live, love and heal from those who care for them every single day.
Bears are deeply emotional and social animals
Bears are often thought of as solitary, but their emotional and social worlds are far richer than many people realise. At Animals Asia’s sanctuaries, resced bears form gentle friendships, choose companions, and share spaces in ways that build trust and familiarity.
Some are playful and boisterous, others calm and observant, but they all navigate relationships in their own way. These bonds are built over time, shaped by personality, past experiences, and a growing sense of safety.

"I love bears because they remind me of giant dogs - specifically my dog, Pongo! Their big bodies and curious faces make them look a bit goofy sometimes, yet they are incredibly intelligent. That mix of clumsy charm and surprising cleverness makes them endlessly fascinating and impossible not to love. I’ve inserted Armstrong’s photo to strengthen my point!"
Bears communicate in subtle and surprising ways
Bears are constantly communicating. From soft chuffs and hums to playful vocalisations and warning calls, sound is just one part of their expressive toolkit. Body language plays an equally important role; a tilt of the head, a relaxed posture, or a cautious step all carry meaning.
As bears recover from their past and grow in confidence, their communication becomes more varied and expressive – revealing curiosity, contentment, and sometimes mischief!

"From the bottom of my heart, I love all our bears. Each one has their own adorable personality. Mellow is one of my favourites — he looks like a tough, cranky character, but in truth he is a very gentle soul, always calm and rarely upset, even when others take his food!
It’s very heartwarming to see him enjoy life now, after everything he has been through. Whether he is resting, playing with his friends, or sitting quietly in the sun, he has a feeling of hard-won peace.
Every time I see his “cranky” face, I can’t help but smile!"
Each bear has a unique personality
All bears have their own unique personality, quirks and behaviours – just like humans! Some love to climb and explore, others prefer to lounge in the sun or splash in water. There are confident characters who take the lead, individuals who quietly observe, and everything in between.
This individuality is one of the most striking things about bears; they are not defined by their species alone, but by who they are as individuals. Seeing a once-shut down bear begin to explore or initiate play is a powerful reminder of their resilience and capacity for joy.

"The thing I love about our bears is their individuality. Our sun bears as a species are highly intelligent, emotional and active. But between them we have gentle Cubby Leo, who likes to relax by herself on her back, or boisterous boys Murphy and Goldie who are much more rambunctious.
Our moon bears are much calmer and easy-going - but we do have the sassy Bailey, who likes to keep her boyfriend Friday to herself, and laidback P.J., who will be friends with everyone. Every bear is free to be their very own selves, and that brings me great joy."
Asia is home to extraordinary bear species
Across Asia, several unique bear species thrive in diverse habitats; from the tree-climbing sun bears of tropical forests to the iconic moon bears, recognised by the crescent markings on their chests. Each species has evolved its own behaviours, diets, and ways of interacting with the world.
Despite these differences, they share common traits: intelligence, playfulness, adaptability, and a strong instinct to explore and forage!

"Buzz once struggled with poor vision, moving cautiously and facing daily challenges in finding food. Despite this, she showed remarkable resilience and never gave up. Seeing her now, confident, clear-sighted, and actively foraging, fills me with deep admiration. Her journey strengthens my love and commitment to helping rescued bears live better lives every day."
Bears are resilient, but they are still under threat
Behind every rescued bear is a story of survival. Many have endured years of confinement and suffering in the bear bile industry, unable to express any of their natural behaviours. When given the chance, their recovery is extraordinary, learning to climb, forage, play, and trust again.
But many still remain in captivity, which is why our work to end bear bile farming in Vietnam is more urgent than ever.

"I've worked here for more than ten years. What started as just a job gradually grew into a passion. My fondness for moon bears probably began with the crescent on their chests, I think it isn’t just decoration but a badge they were born with.
They never bow to cages, nor do they yield to greed. They can forage gently, yet when threatened, they extend their claws. The bears and I are, in a way, healing each other. Through our care, we see the gentleness and strength, confidence and optimism they carry within."
"Romeo is the prince of Bach Ma. Just looking at him, I always felt his positive energy and joy for life. He is friendly, eager to connect with others, and will gently step back whenever conflicts arise. A truly gentle and precious soul."
"I have worked at Animals Asia's bear sanctuary for over ten years, and I’ve truly been happy. While taking care of the bears, I’ve also been healed, learning about responsibility and devotion. Watching them play and run happily on the grass, climbing trees, makes me feel that everything I’ve given is worthwhile.
May every bear be treated with kindness, and may my affection turn into the strength to protect them."
