Still Bearing Up! Animals Asia’s oldest couple celebrate their 181st birthday by raising funds for the remaining bears of Vietnam

23 September 2020

Animals Asia’s “oldest couple” and arguably longest-standing supporters will celebrate their joint 181st birthday on Monday 5 October by attempting to raise an incredible £9,000 to help rescue the remaining 438 bears stuck on bile farms in Vietnam.

Angela and Martin Humphery from London in the UK, met over 50 years ago and discovered they not only shared the same birthday but also a love of animals and an ardent desire to help those in need.

They’ve been passionate and active supporters of Animals Asia for many years; organising, hosting and attending many events that have secured essential funds for our work ending the bear bile trade in Asia and rescuing the bears to our sanctuaries.

But while lockdown and social distancing rules have meant that the caring couple has been unable to host fundraising events this year, they decided to organise a joint online birthday fundraiser. Not even a global pandemic can dampen their enthusiasm for helping the bears!

Angela and Martin said:

“The work that Animals Asia is doing not only to stop the bile trade, but also the dog and cat meat trade AND the use of wild animals in circuses is incredible and we are so happy to support them while we celebrate our birthdays.”

Animals Asia’s Founder and CEO Jill Robinson said:

"We adore Angela and Martin, they're such steadfast champions of animal causes all around the world. Their marvellous energy puts people half their age to shame! They've visited our sanctuaries and have seen first hand the work we do, so we're especially proud that they have chosen to fundraise for the bears to mark their special, and frankly incredibly impressive, joint birthday!"

Angela and Martin, from everyone at Animals Asia - especially the many animals you have helped rescue and care for - we thank you to the moon and back for your kindness, love and tireless dedication to our cause. Have a wonderful birthday!
