After 11 years caring for over 300 rescued bears, this hero will go 26 miles more

Nic hit the target

After dedicating 11 years of her life to the rehabilitation of bears rescued from the bile industry, Nic Field will run the 2018 London Marathon for animals in need.

Having overseen the care of more than 300 rescued bears over the past 11 years, Animals Asia’s Bear and Vet Team Director China Nic Field will this year leave the sanctuary.

Few people in the world have done more to help bears suffering from the cruelty of bear bile farming.

But even after everything she’s given the bears, Nic still wants to do more and will run this year’s London Marathon to raise vital funds that will ensure the bears she loves remain safe and loved.

Nic said:

“Animals Asia and the bears we have rescued have taught me about the best and worst of human nature over the past 11 years.

“It hurts me to see how much the bears have suffered and how the physical and mental scars can stay with them for the rest of their lives – but I’ve also been deeply humbled by the compassion of the people who give their all every day to try and undo some of the wrongs that have been done to these animals.

“The people and the bears have been a huge part of my life and I want to continue to do what I can for them no matter where I am in the world.”

Nic’s pioneering work at the sanctuary has played a huge part in making bear bile farming an international issue of concern, while her tireless compassion has given hundreds of rescued bears the respect and dignity they deserve.

On the day, Nic will be joined by fellow Animals Asia supporter Russell Turner who is also running the marathon to raise funds for the NGO’s work to end bear bile farming, stop the cruelty of the dog meat trade, and improve the welfare of captive animals across Asia.

Russell’s interest in Animals Asia was sparked by UK musician Rick Wakeman, who became an Animals Asia ambassador in 2017 having long been considered a member of the Animals Asia family due to his support and fundraising concerts.
