Little Mac
Rescued from a circus. Reunited with nature.
Before her rescue, Little Mac knew only fear. Likely torn from her mother as a tiny cub, she was one of the last four performing bears at Hanoi Central Circus.
She spent her early years in captivity – forced to perform tricks including riding motorbikes. Every command was backed by threats, every mistake punished. After each show, she was shut away in a concrete den with no comfort, no peace.
Bears like Little Mac often develop abnormal behaviours like pacing and head-swaying – signs of deep psychological trauma. But amid that harsh world, she had one gentle constant: another young bear named Chilli-Bienchen.
Together, they waited for something better. And eventually, it came.
The rescue
After years of advocacy by Animals Asia, Hanoi Central Circus agreed to end all wild animal performances and release their four remaining performing bears into Animals Asia’s care.
In June 2021, our rescue team arrived to bring Little Mac and the three other bears home to our Tam Dao bear sanctuary. As she was waiting in her transport cage, her circus trainer reached through the bars and held her paw one last time. A strange, tender moment in a life marked by fear.
Later that day, Little Mac made her first choice in years – she followed a trail of strawberry sauce into her new quarantine space at our Tam Dao sanctuary. No chains. No punishment. Just kindness and quiet.

The first days – safety, softly given
For the next month, everything was done at Little Mac’s pace. Her carers spoke gently, moved slowly, and offered toys, treats and soft, kind words. She quickly showed a playful side – splashing in her water trough, twirling straw brooms, and accepting toys with growing curiosity.
She loved her hose showers, disliked cabbage, and slowly began to trust the humans around her. With each passing day, Little Mac grew in confidence. She was realising that she was finally safe.
A health check and a new home
During her first full health check we discovered Little Mac was young and healthy. While she was still sedated, the team moved her into her very own den complete with comfy beds, hanging toys and platforms for climbing on.
For the first time, she had the freedom to stretch, to rest, and to choose where and how to be. And just beside her, in a neighbouring den, was her old friend from the circus.
Reunited with Chilli-Bienchen
After their rescue, Little Mac and Chilli-Bienchen spent some time apart during quarantine. But when the slide between their dens finally opened, it was as if they’d never been apart. They greeted each other softly, then curled up side by side, just as they must have done so many times before.
Only now, they were safe. Surrounded by kindness, freedom and all the things they’d never had. A friendship forged in fear, finally given room to flourish.

Stepping onto grass
When the door to the outdoor enclosure opened, Little Mac hesitated. She sniffed the air, then followed her friend outside. Soft grass replaced concrete. Swaying trees and the warm sun replaced rusty bars and cold walls.
Two days later, Little Mac was leading the way. Following her nose, chasing treats, discovering the simple joys of space and the soft ground beneath her paws.
‘She is small in size, but she has a big heart,’ said bear carer Sarah. ‘She just couldn’t wait to explore.’
Building friendships
Soon, Little Mac was integrated with the other bears from the circus, as well as other moon bears at the sanctuary. And while Chilli-Bienchen remained her closest companion, it was Lam who unlocked a new side to Little Mac…
He showed her how to play. And once she started, she couldn’t stop – wrestling, rolling, chasing, foraging. Her carers delighted in her cheeky side. And when Chilli-Bienchen took her food when she wasn’t looking? Little Mac didn’t mind, she just went and got more!
A life transformed
From trembling on a stage to twirling toys in the sun, Little Mac’s journey is one of survival, healing and joy. Every moment of peace she now enjoys is a moment she never thought she’d have.
Thanks to the kindness of people like you, Little Mac is no longer a victim of entertainment – she’s a bear with a future, living the life she’s always deserved.
