Veterinary care – a deep dive
Where compassion meets science
Behind every thriving bear is a veterinary team working tirelessly to heal the damage caused by years on bile farms.
Our hospitals in Vietnam and China combine cutting-edge science with deep compassion – giving every bear a second chance at life.
Health checks – preventing pain before it starts
Bears are stoic animals and rarely show illness until disease is advanced.
Regular health checks allow our vets to perform blood tests, x-rays and ultrasounds – all while the bear is safely anaesthetised.
-
Initial checks happen at rescue
-
Routine checks every 2–3 years catch early disease
-
Sick-bear checks ensure quick intervention.
Gall bladder surgery – the road to recovery
Almost every rescued bear requires gall-bladder removal after years of bile extraction.
Our expert surgeons have performed hundreds of these complex operations, giving bears relief from chronic pain and infection. Recovery is closely monitored with tailored diets and gentle behavioural support.
Pioneering advanced dentistry
Dental disease is one of the most painful legacies of bile farming.
Working with world-renowned veterinary dentist Dr Cedric Tutt, our team has pioneered root-canal therapy that preserves teeth and reduces recovery time.
So far, over 100 root canals have been performed – meaning bears can eat, play and live pain-free.
“Dental disease is debilitating in any species,” says Dr Tutt. “The progress Animals Asia has made in addressing it is exceptional.”
A legacy of learning and leadership
Our Vietnamese Veterinary Internship Programme trains young veterinarians in advanced wildlife medicine – from anaesthesia to surgical technique – combining academic rigour with compassionate, ethical care.
Continuous research and innovation
We’re constantly refining our techniques – from testing new dental materials to exploring 3D imaging such as cone-beam CT for more accurate diagnosis. Our goal: the best possible care for every bear, and shared knowledge across the global veterinary community.
Together, we’re rewriting what’s possible in wildlife medicine – proving that with compassion, expertise and innovation, every rescued animal can begin heal.
Help us put an end to animal cruelty
Animals are being captured and exploited every day. Animals Asia has helped thousands, but there is always another animal in need of our help. Please donate today.
