Animals Asia signed an agreement with the Vietnamese Government to bring bear bile farming to an end.  In 2021, we will be taking the final steps to make that happen and are growing our sanctuary team. This is your chance to join our current team of four Bear Team Managers and help make the world a kinder place for animals.

You will be primarily based at our Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre, in Tam Dao National Park, though be an important member of the team to provide oversight at our new sanctuary in central Vietnam. You are flexible and enjoy the challenge of working remotely.

You are highly motivated, experienced, and empathetic. You are passionate about animal welfare and people. You have highly developed interpersonal skills, and get deep satisfaction and fulfilment from providing hands on training in animal care and welfare.

  • Capacity building and training Vietnamese members of staff.
  • Co-coordinating various daily operations at either of the two Animals Asia Vietnam sanctuaries:
    • Animal care and management
    • Maintenance and adjustment of existing enrichment programs
    • Ordering stock as required
    • Maintaining bear behavior records & databases
  • Operant conditioning and formal bear training programs for a variety of medical, behavioural and management requirements.
  • Report writing, including producing material used by the Communications Team for social media and the Animals Asia website.
  • Human resources:
    • Staff evaluations
    • Ensuring morale is maintained within bear care staff
    • Identifying and addressing HR issues with the Senior Bear Team Manager as they arise
  • As needed:
    • Overseeing the quarantine of newly rescued bears
    • Participating in the hand-rearing and care of rescued orphan cubs
    • Managing the integration of bears into mixed sex, social groups

You would be asked to start in July 2021, pending international travel availability. Animals Asia will provide logistical support in terms of entry to Vietnam.


  • A university degree in zoology, biology, conservation, animal welfare, animal behaviour or related field is mandatory for visa purposes.
  • At least five years of hands on experience in husbandry/behavioural management in a captive wild animal facility or similar. Kindly note: this position will not suit applicants who have worked only in a veterinary capacity.
  • Willingness to travel from Tam Dao Sanctuary near Hanoi to central Vietnam to provide support and oversight at the new sanctuary. This would occur on a rotating basis, several times per year.
  • As this position will work in a team comprising staff from multiple cultures, self-awareness, empathy and patience are essential.
  • Ability to manage own time effectively and prioritise tasks.
  • Computer literacy, including Excel.
  • Strong people management skills and the ability to work in a team or independently.
  • Fluent in English.
  • A good sense of humor, excellent communication skills, and the ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team.
  • Suitable candidates must be able to commit for a minimum of 2 years.

Appointment is paid, full-time, five (5) days a week with some weekend work applicable.
