The doggies encountered in the MTR network on International Dog Day were not a figment of your imagination! On 26 August, 2023, 20 of our Dr Dogs made history by hopping aboard the city’s trains for the very first time! This special arrangement made by the MTR marked a remarkable campaign for International Dog Day and aimed to raise public awareness about the contribution of Dr Dogs to our community.

The Impactful Ride

This event marked the first time that dogs other than guide dogs were allowed to travel on the MTR.  Adhering to travel guidelines, our Dr Dogs were comfortably bagged and rode in the last carriages of the trains. This safe and smooth execution is a testament to the dedication of both the MTR Corporation and Animals Asia to prioritize well-being while advocating for a more inclusive society for our furry friends.

Amplifying Awareness

Marnie Yau, the Dr Dog Program Manager for Animals Asia, expressed hope that the event, complemented by the MTR's campaign, had significantly elevated the understanding of what therapy dogs offer to society. "This has sparked conversations and increased curiosity about what Dr Dog is and how it positively impacts the community," said Marnie.

Dr Dog: More Than a Program

Our Dr Dog initiative, operating in Hong Kong for over 30 years, comprises more than 100 registered therapy dogs. These canine companions regularly visit hospitals, schools, and care homes to offer emotional support and spread joy.

The Public's Response

Annie Leung, General Manager (Marketing and Customer Experience) of the MTR Corporation, acknowledged the different views from the public. While there was overwhelming support for the initiative, a small number of passengers expressed concerns. The MTR Corporation is now collecting feedback and reviewing the event.

A Step Towards Inclusivity

We regard this event as a pivotal moment in advocating for a more animal-friendly Hong Kong. We are incredibly grateful to the MTR Corporation for their partnership in this ground-breaking project. Their collaborative efforts and commitment have been instrumental in making this event a huge success and it has also set the stage for conversations about pet-friendly policies in Hong Kong.
