How many moon bears does it take to break a hammock?

27 March 2017

They grew up on bile farms, now all they have to worry about is whether their hammock can survive moon bear playtime.

It was a spring morning just like any other for rescued moon bears Bao Be and Kira.

The birds were singing as Bao Be swayed gently on a bamboo hammock. His pal Kira was beside him lounging on the grass and lazily chewing a young bamboo shoot.

But this peaceful scene was interrupted when Kira seemed to have a bright idea – perhaps that wonderful bamboo hammock was big enough for two bears?

In the glorious display of pushing, cuddling and wrestling which ensued, a crack could be heard and both bears gently dropped to the earth. A confused-looking Bao Be found himself on the grass wondering how he got there – and why was there a broken wooden support structure beneath his paws?

Kira meanwhile was suddenly lying on the hammock looking like butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth.

They both looked at the broken log. Bao Be seemed to realise he had no way to fix it and perhaps understood that in some way its breakage was connected to the hammock’s sudden lack of comfort.

In any case, he knew who was to blame and bounced back onto the hammock.

For the next few minutes these two ursine besties were a roly-poly pile of gently pushing fur until finally, Kira was upside down and, most importantly, back on the grass.

Animals Asia’s China Bear and Vet Team Director Nic Field said:

“These two are a lovely pair who deserve every moment of happiness. Unfortunately, that’s another hammock we’ll have to repair. It’s a fact of bear life really – they are so strong that every play structure needs repairing eventually.

“Our very talented horticulture team build these hammocks and swings and each one is made with love. Every bear loves a hammock – so much so that they can’t wait their turn!”.
