A Hong Kong mall is under fire for a Christmas display inexplicably themed around the cruel practice of animal performance.

The Landmark, one of the city’s most prestigious malls has raised eyebrows and received criticism by decking out their shopping centre with statues of hippos performing on trapeze and bicycle-riding elephants.

Shoppers have been left scratching their heads as to why animal performance – criticised worldwide for its inherent animal cruelty – is being used in connection with Christmas.

Animals Asia founder and CEO, Jill Robinson MBE said:

“We’re shocked. Animal lovers are turning their backs on animal performance as they are aware of the cruelty involved. The law is increasingly on their side with government directives ordering an end to animal performance in all zoos and safari parks in China. When did cruelty become part of Christmas?”

China’s malls have been in the international press throughout 2016 due to the rise of shopping centres using animals to attract more customers.

Jill Robinson added:

“Thankfully no live animals are being harmed in The Landmark’s mall, but they are setting an awful example. The display has the potential to normalise cruelty, particularly among the children it is aimed at. Of all the Christmas messages – why on earth did they choose this?”
