Caged for 14 years – take a look at Nhan Ai now

25 May 2015

Happy #MoonBearMonday everyone!

The last time we caught up with moon bear Nhan Ai, she was struggling to adapt to the wide-open spaces of her enclosure.

It’s a common issue for bears that have known only the tiniest of spaces and a complete lack of liberty. This was certainly true for Nhan Ai who endured 14 years in a cage before being freed by Animals Asia in 2014.

But thankfully, Nhan Ai – whose name means “compassion” – is now relishing her time among the grass, trees and visiting butterflies of Animals Asia’s Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre.

Nhan Ai before rescue

Recent footage shows this once timid bear playing robustly with a sanctuary puzzle feeder – chewing, pawing, biting and hugging this bamboo toy.

Animals Asia Bear and Vet Team Director Annemarie Weegenaar said:

“In the last few months Nhan Ai has become much more outgoing, more confident, and is generally enjoying life to the full. It’s quite common for rescued bears to take time to adapt to the outdoors and that was certainly true for Nhan Ai. But her recent improvement has been remarkable and a huge boost for the team. Seeing her lying in the grass and playing with the sanctuary equipment without a care in the world, makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

Like Nhan Ai, make the most of your #MoonBearMonday.
