Why do Asia’s bears still need your help?

While a lot of progress has been made in ending this outdated practice, there are still hundreds of bears trapped on bile farms across Asia. Bear bile is still regarded by some as a traditional, effective remedy for liver and gallbladder ailments, leading to the continued farming of these animals. Often, bears spend 20-30 years in tiny cages with little food or water, while enduring painful extraction processes with no medical care.

Sanctuaries

Our award-winning sanctuaries in Chengdu (China) and Tam Dao (Vietnam) have rescued over 700 bears so far. With our Tam Dao sanctuary now full,  we opened our much-needed second sanctuary in Vietnam after an agreement with the government to end bear bile farming in the country. These sanctuaries offer spacious, semi-natural enclosures and lifelong care.

Reducing demand

There are many natural, effective alternatives to bear bile as a remedy for liver and gallbladder ailments. We work to spread awareness through a partnership with the Vietnamese Traditional Medicine Association, as well as presenting information in schools and villages. 

Monitoring the trade

We track farm operations and traders, exposing illegal practices while working closely with authorities to enforce regulations.

Public awareness campaigns

Through media outreach, billboards, social engagement, school programs, and celebrity advocacy (including Joanna Lumley’s championing of Dawn the bear), we’re transforming public opinion and raising awareness of the suffering of these hidden bears.
