No bear left behind

Since committing in 2017 to end bear bile farming, the Government of Vietnam has made huge progress towards its goal. In partnership with Animals Asia, the bear bile industry in Vietnam has been dismantled. By the end of 2026 it will be over.

But for the last survivors of this terrible practice, it is too long to wait. After decades in cages, suffering physical abuse and emotional neglect, they are barely holding on. Every day without the food, love and medical care they so desperately need, is shortening their life.

Why are bears still in cages?

Although extracting bile from bears is illegal, it remains legal to keep bears at a private residence. This is why every bear rescue must be individually negotiated. And why every rescue takes months to achieve. Inspections carried out between May and July 2025 found 156 bears kept in this way. Time is running out for them. We must act now.

It ends with them

The last bile bears have survived devastating abuse. When bear bile farming in Vietnam is finally consigned to history, let it be with as many survivors of the trade as possible living out their lives at Animals Asia’s sanctuary.
