Why is elephant riding unethical?

In Asia, it’s common to find elephant riding experiences at tourist hotspots. Taking part in elephant riding encourages animal cruelty. Poached from the wild, baby elephants are brutally beaten into submission so they fear humans. Kept in chains for decades, they’re robbed of their natural behaviours. They have no space to roam, play and be social. Some will be worked to death, forced to carry tourists on their back day after day in the blistering heat.

This was the life of poor H’Blu (pictured above). At 62 years old, H’Blu has endured an entire lifetime of misery. She’d spend eight-plus hours a day malnourished and dehydrated.

Animals Asia’s ethical elephant project

Thankfully, there is hope. In 2021 Animals Asia signed an historic agreement with the government of the Dak Lak province – which had the largest number of riding elephants in Vietnam – to end elephant riding for good.

Since then, we’ve worked with the local community to rescue over a dozen elephants, many currently live in the beautiful Yok Don National Park, including H’Blu. Here, supported and cared for by their mahouts, elephants are free to roam, while tourists observe them in their natural habitat from a respectful distance.
