Why is bear cub trafficking so cruel?

Bear cub trafficking is a hidden tragedy. Stolen from their mothers – often after their mothers are killed – terrified cubs are stuffed into cages, destined for bile farms, roadside zoos, circuses or to be exploited as photo props. They’re denied their natural lives: no forest to explore, no chance to climb, play, or grow up under their mother’s care. Many endure painful mutilations and bile extractions, kept in tiny cages where they can’t even turn around. Some will languish there for decades.

Little bear cub, Cocoon was sold via an advert on Facebook. She was en-route to Laos, hidden in a laundry bag strapped to the back of a motorbike, when her trafficker was intercepted by a police sting. 

Cocoon was saved just in time and spared a life of unimaginable pain, but there are more bears like Cocoon, who are at risk of disappearing into the trafficking trade. We need your help to be ready to race to their rescue before it’s too late.

Animals Asia’s bear sanctuary project

Thankfully, there is hope. For over 25 years, Animals Asia has worked to end bear bile farming and wildlife trafficking, rescuing more than 700 bears across Vietnam and China.

At our award-winning sanctuaries, bears like Cocoon finally have a chance to heal. Thanks to the support of animal champions around the world, Cocoon is now a happy, healthy adult bear.

She roams lush enclosures, splashes in pools, climbs trees, and rediscovers the joy stolen from her as a cub. With expert, round-the-clock veterinary care, she lives the life a bear was always meant to – free from harm..
