Boris Chiao
Founding Director
Hong-Kong born Boris is head of construction at our China Moon Bear Rescue Centre in Chengdu, and one of the founding members of Animals Asia. Initially responsible for overseeing the building and development of the sanctuary, he continues to manage ongoing construction as the centre expands. He is also responsible for the logistics involved in bear rescues, doing everything from hiring the necessary equipment and vehicles, plotting the routes and ensuring that plans are in place for all contingencies. Having been with Animals Asia since the start, Boris is also involved in developing our strategies to end bear bile farming and improve animal welfare.
Working with international architects and consultant experts from around Asia, Boris and his team have created roomy bear dens complete with hanging basket beds, outside rehabilitation enclosures and bamboo forest zones, quarantine and holding areas, wastewater treatment facilities, accommodation for on-site veterinary staff and bear carers, and individual areas for “special-care bears” that cannot be integrated into large groups.
His father’s love of animals and nature had a great influence on Boris, who, from an early age nurtured a deep respect for all living things and a desire to improve the lives of people and animals.
Having lived in Hong Kong, the UK and the US, Boris has a good insight and understanding of various cultures. His fluency in three languages and shrewd management skills have also allowed him to coordinate investigative and technical animal welfare programmes throughout Asia.
