Unsung heroes – Larry Feign

We have so many fantastic supporters who help us in a myriad of ways and many of these people never get any recognition for their generous support. So every now and again I’d like to say a special thank you to one of these wonderful people.

Our Hong Kong supporters will be familiar with the whimsical wit of cartoonist and author, Larry Feign, whose cartoons have appeared in over 100 publications around the world. Larry’s creation, the cartoon-strip character, Lily Wong, has been one of Hong Kong’s most-loved icons for many years. And now, thanks to Larry’s generosity, she’s joined the animals Asia’s team! One of our volunteers approached Larry a year or so ago to ask if he would donate one of his drawings to us to auction off at a fundraiser.

Larry didn’t hesitate; he said he’d have one in the post right away. We were thrilled when his artwork arrived – it was a new original work of Lily Wong and a Moon Bear cub. Not only did the adorable drawing go for the top bid of the night, but Larry also gave us permission to reprint the drawing on some greeting cards (pictured) to raise even more money.

Larry is also donating all royalties from the sale of his latest book, the satirical “Hongkongitis” – which he refers to as “a neurotic view of Hong Kong”, to Animals Asia. This is Larry’s fifteenth book and proves that he has as much talent writing about his adopted home as he does immortalising it in cartoons. Thanks Larry.
