years ago this April, Jill Robinson first walked onto a bear bile farm. On that day in April 1993, Jill could have walked away, but she chose to act and do what she could. Today, you also have a choice. If everyone reading this donated just US$20, it would pay for the care of over 150 bears at our China sanctuary for a full year. Please help us celebrate 20 years of progress. Donate US$20 today (or whatever you can afford).
Our "Friends or Food?" programme and our film "Dr. Eddie: Friend.... or Food?" was inspired by a real dog: "Eddie", who was destined for the dinner table....
Amidst the sea of misery and suffering in an animal market, we found "Eddie" - painfully thin, covered in bite wounds and trapped in a rusty cage with 3 other frightened, miserable animals. He was waiting to be slaughtered for human consumption and licked the hand of anyone who reached in and gave him a few seconds of comfort.
All around us dogs and cats were being beaten to death, boiled alive, stabbed and strangled on the spot, or cruelly bound with wire and stuffed into sacks to be slaughtered at restaurants. Feeling utterly helpless, but determined to do something.....we made the decision to rescue him.
Eddie was brought back to Hong Kong and soon became a proud ambassador for our successful Dr. Dog animal therapy programme, which is opening the door to people's hearts and minds across Asia - showing everyone he meets what a valuable and unique role companion animals can play in our society.
Through the healing power of our Dr. Dog programme and thanks to dogs like Dr. Eddie, governments and local communities are at last recognising animals as our companions, our helpers and our best friends.
Eddie is a favourite with hospital staff and has his own Chinese nickname - wherever he goes he is greeted with cries of "Wong Jai!" - "Yellow Boy!" by the friendly nurses! Following magazine and newspaper appearances, Eddie is also becoming a local and international star, having appeared with Jill on CNN's “TalkAsia” and National Geographic’s “Dogs with Jobs”. Eddie is now the narrator and star of his own film in the Animals Asia “Friends or Food” video: “Dr. Eddie - Friend.... or Food?”.
Eddie is a true celebrity and lives at home with Jill where he dominates dogs five times his size and is always demanding love and attention!
But most importantly of all, Eddie is proving, without a shadow of a doubt, why dogs and cats are our friends - not food.
