years ago this April, Jill Robinson first walked onto a bear bile farm. On that day in April 1993, Jill could have walked away, but she chose to act and do what she could. Today, you also have a choice. If everyone reading this donated just US$20, it would pay for the care of over 150 bears at our China sanctuary for a full year. Please help us celebrate 20 years of progress. Donate US$20 today (or whatever you can afford).
What is bear sponsorship? For US$1.50 a day, our sponsorship programme allows you to sponsor one of our many beautiful bears providing them with their basic needs – nutritious food, water, a lovely sanctuary and medical attention. You sponsorship provides invaluable support in helping to ensure these bears make a full recovery from their horrific past and live the rest of their life enjoying their freedom.
What will I get as a sponsor? As a sponsor you will receive a welcome package from Animals Asia which includes a photo of your bear in a cardboard frame, information about him/her and general details of our sanctuary and how your bear will benefit from your support. Every year you will get an updated photo of your bear enjoying his days at the sanctuary. You will also receive regular updates on Animals Asia so you are informed of our work and campaigns.
In what countries can we sponsor a bear? We have sanctuaries in Chengdu, China and Tam Dao, Vietnam. We will choose a bear for you from either of our sanctuaries.
Are all bears eligible for sponsorship? When we set up the programme in 2009, all of the rescued bears in our care at the time were included in the programme. Since then, a lot of the more-recently rescued have been gradually added to the programme, depending on their health condition and age.
Can we choose our own bear? To be fair to all our bears Animals Asia prefers to choose a bear for you to ensure that all our bears are given the same love, care and attention. It’s hard not to have favourites but each of our bears all have their own unique qualities.
How is the bear benefiting from my monthly contribution? The sponsorship money you send is added to that of other people who also sponsor bears. Your collective funds allow us to provide necessities such as food, water, a sanctuary and medical care for the bears. Sponsorship funds are used to provide enrichment programmes for our bears which simulate their natural behaviour in the wild. In addition, your funds indirectly help to strengthen the economy of the local community as our sanctuary provides the main source of employment for over 200 local people.
Am I the only sponsor for my bear? The costs of rehabilitating and caring for a wild animal throughout its life can be very expensive. As such each bear will require more than one sponsor to support its basic needs. If you would like to be the only sponsor we would be delighted to provide you with more information on how much it would cost.
Can I visit my bear? At this point in time, our sanctuaries are not open full-time to the public due to government restrictions. However, our China rescue centre holds Open Days twice a month on Saturdays. You can find out how to join an Open Day guided tour on our website at this link.
Unfortunately, because of on-going construction our Vietnam centre is not yet open to visitors.
Can I send gifts to my bear? We understand your wish to send special gifts to your bear. Animals Asia has a policy not to accept gifts as the bears follow quite a strict routine and diet that is vital for their health and well being. In addition, all bears are treated equally and we would not encourage special treatment to any one bear. Added to this, there maybe duty charges, slow and unreliable postal service and a possibility of theft and damage.
How does a bear get his or her name? Generous supporters like you who want the privilege to name a bear that we have rescued pay USD10,000 to do so. Once the bear is given a name we do not change it.
When will my bear no longer need assistance? Unfortunately your bear will no longer need assistance only when he or she passes away. When this happens during your sponsorship, we will inform you of the unfortunate news at the time.
How do I cancel my sponsorship? You can cancel your sponsorship at any time. If you wish to do so you may call your nearest Animals Asia office or email us.
Can I sponsor a bear online? Yes you may sponsor a bear online. Simply fill in the application form and submit your details online with secure payment. We accept both Visa and MasterCard online. When your payment is confirmed we will send you a welcome pack together with a photo and details of your bear.
Can I contribute by credit card? Yes you may. We accept Visa and MasterCard. You can make automatic monthly contributions by credit card or by direct debit from your checking account.
Can I sponsor a bear by making monthly cheque donations? Unfortunately this would make it very difficult for us to administer the programme so we can only accept either a direct debit - standing order or monthly telegraphic transfer - or credit card sponsorship on a monthly basis.
Can I send more than one month's amount toward my sponsorship support? This sponsorship programme has been set up as a monthly giving programme in response to feedback from our supporters. Its purpose is to provide a way for donors to make a long-term commitment to the bears and provide much-needed, reliable funding for the bears at our sanctuaries, while at the same time, being administratively low. Our experience to date shows that offering alternative donation options adds greatly to the administration thereby increasing the programme costs, and complicates the processing of donations. Therefore, we can only accept donations to this programme on a monthly basis through credit card, standing order or monthly telegraphic transfer.
How can I change my giving method? Please call your local Animals Asia office to change your giving method.
How can I change my billing address? Please call you local AAF office to change your billing address or send us an email.
How do I know my donations are going where you say they are going? Animals Asia follows very strict accounting procedures governed by law. We operate in a fully accountable way with our tax records being transparent to the public. You can see a performance review for the last financial year with a detailed breakdown of income and expenditure on our website at this link.
