years ago this April, Jill Robinson first walked onto a bear bile farm. On that day in April 1993, Jill could have walked away, but she chose to act and do what she could. Today, you also have a choice. If everyone reading this donated just US$20, it would pay for the care of over 150 bears at our China sanctuary for a full year. Please help us celebrate 20 years of progress. Donate US$20 today (or whatever you can afford).
All owners and their dogs who wish to volunteer on the Professor Paws programme, need to be examined by AAF staff for suitability. After completing the examinations, dogs will be assessed for their suitability to join the Professor Paws programme.
Basic Volunteer Requirements
Volunteers must be over the age of 18 and the dog must be their own.
Volunteers must be committed to the programme and its aims.
Volunteers must have good "people skills" and an enthusiastic personality.
Volunteers must be willing to be a part of a team and enjoy meeting new people.
To volunteer on the Professor Paws programme, you must be available on weekdays.
Requirements for volunteers with dogs
Volunteer dogs of pedigree or mixed breed naturally need to be healthy and have a happy, placid, nature.
Dogs must be at least two years old before examination.
Both male and female dogs must be de-sexed. Read details on the benefits of de-sexing your dog.
Dogs must display basic obedience skills.
Dogs must have lived with the handler for at least 6 months prior to examination.
All vaccinations must be up to date and proof of vaccination provided for our records.
Any dog over 20 kg in weight must be held on a leash not more than 2 metres in length when in a public place (as specified by the Dangerous Dogs Legislation) by the Agriculture and Fisheries Department (AFCD) in Hong Kong.
All dogs must be examined by an AAF professional to assess temperament, obedience and suitability
Following a health check by a Green Cross veterinary surgeon, you and your dog will be monitored. Final decisions regarding acceptance onto the program will be made by an AAF representative based on your attendance and the character and behaviour of your dog.
Each successful applicant will be registered with AAF and will receive an official Dr. Dog ID card, volunteer card and T-shirt. Additional Professor Paws identifications will be issued following assessment by AAF staff.
A donation of HK$500* (per dog) is needed for the examination for Dr. Dog - your contribution will directly enable us to expand our education initiatives, raise awareness and restore respect for all animals, under the umbrella of our "Friends...or Food?" campaign.
*While all dogs are special, Animals Asia welcomes mixed-breed dogs to join the programme for free. In Asia, where dogs are often designated as 'friend' or 'food', it is increasingly important to send a strong message that mixed-breeds are just as valuable and that every single dog; pedigree or stray, is a potential helper, healer and best friend.
