years ago this April, Jill Robinson first walked onto a bear bile farm. On that day in April 1993, Jill could have walked away, but she chose to act and do what she could. Today, you also have a choice. If everyone reading this donated just US$20, it would pay for the care of over 150 bears at our China sanctuary for a full year. Please help us celebrate 20 years of progress. Donate US$20 today (or whatever you can afford).
August 2010: Our position paper "Friends or Food - Why Dogs and Cats Deserve Better", calls for the end of dog and cat consumption and is available for anyone to download and spread the word. The Paper is a compilation of interviews, statements and research in an easy to read document which hopefully now responds to the most frequently asked questions about the issue as a whole.
After writing to PETA, we received a positive response where they agreed not to pursue their call for the humane slaughter of food dogs and cats in China, in light of the arguments presented in our Paper. We are sincerely grateful to PETA for this decision and encourage other groups who are asking that food dogs and cats be killed "humanely" now follow PETA's example and cease this call, as we all work towards the end of dog and cat consumption once and for all.
Such calls, whilst naturally wanting to help those poor victims currently suffering in the markets, are undermining the success of countries where dog and cat consumption is banned, and diluting the current work and actions of groups in Asia who are giving companion animals their "voice" not to be killed for food or fur. In a country where no animal welfare legislation exists, and veterinary standards sadly lag behind many other countries, the words and practices of so-called "humane slaughter" would, in reality, mean little to the dogs and cats.
Our position paper looks at the arguments in more detail and presents a case for companion animals to be recognised as friends - not food or fur.
