Canadian seal slaugher

9 April 2009

Animals Asia is opposed to the slaughter of seals in Canada and elsewhere, and endorses the position of Humane Society International and the Hong Kong SPCA, which are calling for an import ban on products of the slaughter in Hong Kong. We recently sent the letter below to Canadian government officials in both Canada and Hong Kong calling for an end to the annual slaughter. Please feel free to copy the relevant text below and send your own letter in support of a ban to your nearest Canadian embassy and/or direct to the Canadian government.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing on behalf of Animals Asia Foundation, a Hong Kong based non-government organisation dedicated to improving the welfare of animals across Asia and beyond.

We wish to voice our opposition to the annual slaughter of young harp seals on the ice sheets off eastern Canada.

  • The slaughter of young harp seals by clubbing or shooting in the harsh conditions on the ice sheets, by poorly trained sealers, has been repeatedly exposed as inhumane by both Canadian and international experts. Many of the seals die slow, painful deaths, and there is evidence that some are skinned while still alive

  • The slaughter is resulting in a decline in harp seal numbers, at a time when other threats, including overfishing and depletion of the seals' food source, and global warming and the receding of the ice sheets on which the seals depend, demand a precautionary approach to the conservation of harp seals

  • There is evidence that the majority of the Canadian public are opposed to the slaughter, and that they support international bans on the products of the slaughter

  • The slaughter is not financially self sustaining, provides less than 5% of the sealers' annual income, and only continues because of subsidies and support from your government
Animals Asia Foundation supports and endorses the efforts of animal welfare and conservation organisations worldwide, to achieve national and regional bans on the products of the Canadian seal slaughter, and to bring the practice to an end. In order to uphold your moral and democratic credentials, we call on you to ban this cruel, inhumane, unsustainable practice.

Sincerely,

Mark Jones BVSc MSc(Stir) MSc(London) MRCVS, Veterinarian
