years ago this April, Jill Robinson first walked onto a bear bile farm. On that day in April 1993, Jill could have walked away, but she chose to act and do what she could. Today, you also have a choice. If everyone reading this donated just US$20, it would pay for the care of over 150 bears at our China sanctuary for a full year. Please help us celebrate 20 years of progress. Donate US$20 today (or whatever you can afford).
In early August 2012, our Moon Bear Rescue Centre in Chengdu, China hosted its fourth annual camp for supporters from across the country.
Animals Asia has organized the Supporter Group Summer Camp every year since 2008 and this year, another 29 supporters from different corners of China had the opportunity to share their love and passion for moon bears. The participants not only visited the sanctuary, but also took part in animal welfare training, capacity building workshops, case study analysis, etc. The camp is also a great forum for them to connect with each other and share their experiences.
During the camp, the participants got the chance to learn about Animals Asia’s programmes, facts about bear farming from a vet’s perspective, as well as making enrichment items for the bears’ enclosures.
While on-site the group was deeply touched by the story of Franzi and Rupert, our small, feisty little lady and her large, gentle best friend. One of the participants later created an online image and message to share on Weibo (China’s largest social media forum) calling on more people to support the call to end bear farming.
In the “Moon bear forum” the guest speakers taught our participants many practical skills in launching campaigns, such as how to promote action through traditional media and social media, and how to promote information through handwork and the dramatic arts.
On the final day of camp, participants shared their experiences and stories, addressed issues raised during camp, and performed short dramas based on animal protection.
Toby Zhang, our External Affairs Director in China brought the camp to a close and issued certificates to all participants.
“Mr. Zhang’s speech was so inspiring, I learned how to be a great animal welfare volunteer, how to effectively pass the message, and how to really help the animals in need. I will keep doing it, and keep supporting AAF.”
Supporter, Summer camp 2012
Although the 2012 supporter group summer camp was a great success, we still have a great deal of work ahead. But we continue to be motivated and inspired by these wonderful people, from all walks of life and from across the country, who share our vision to end bear faming for good.
