years ago this April, Jill Robinson first walked onto a bear bile farm. On that day in April 1993, Jill could have walked away, but she chose to act and do what she could. Today, you also have a choice. If everyone reading this donated just US$20, it would pay for the care of over 150 bears at our China sanctuary for a full year. Please help us celebrate 20 years of progress. Donate US$20 today (or whatever you can afford).
This year’s Moon Bear Rock at Delaney’s Irish pub in Wan Chai was another great success – raising awareness, lots of money, and more than a little hell!
Altogether the bands, bar takings, raffle, auction and sale brought in an amazing HK$176,446, all of which will go to the rescue of suffering, endangered Moon Bears languishing on bile farms in China and Vietnam.
The night’s biggest hell-raisers, high-energy eighties covers band Black Seraphine, kept the crowd at Delaney’s in Wan Chai rocking till the wee hours. Even wild-haired frontman John Prymmer’s foray’s into the crowd didn’t deter the punters.
The entertainment kicked off at a gentler pace with talented Aussie singer/guitarist Greg Thomas, followed by Scarlett Lewis with her original mix of folk, jazz, blues and rock.
The Shotgun SheRas, Hong Kong’s very own all-girl country and western band, who really got the party going (think Dolly Parton and Lorretta Lynn) and Lamma outfit Red Star Rising with their unique brand of original blues rock and stunning guitar work.
But there was a serious side to the night – the hushed crowd watched and listened in horror as Jill Robinson gave a moving presentation about the Moon Bears still being tortured on farms throughout China. Jill was also able to deliver some good news – that AAF will soon be opening a new bear sanctuary in Vietnam, after eight long years of negotiations with the authorities there.
Delaney’s pub kindly agreed to host the event for the third time, and San Miguel and Stella Artois donated the beer. So 100% of beer sales went to Animals Asia and, on top of this, Delaney’s donated 50% of all other bar takings. Delaney’s also provided a fantastic free veggie supper. We couldn’t let Delaney’s continued generosity go unrecognised, so the pub now has a framed portrait of beautiful Moon Bear we have named “Delaney”.
Hong Kong businesses once again showed their strong support, donating tens of thousands of dollars worth of goods and dining vouchers that were auctioned off, sold at bargain prices or taken home by lucky-draw winners. We also had some great auction items including a drawing of Lily Wong with a Moon Bear by Hong Kong cartoonist Larry Feign and a photographic session for pets donated by Petographer, both of which sparked some lively bidding.
