years ago this April, Jill Robinson first walked onto a bear bile farm. On that day in April 1993, Jill could have walked away, but she chose to act and do what she could. Today, you also have a choice. If everyone reading this donated just US$20, it would pay for the care of over 150 bears at our China sanctuary for a full year. Please help us celebrate 20 years of progress. Donate US$20 today (or whatever you can afford).
After attending an Animals Asia roadshow event in Manchester, supporter Phil Dowling was so moved by the plight of the moon bears he wanted to create a permanent talking point and what better way but to wear his support. Not with a t-shirt or scarf … but a tattoo!
As Jasper is his wife Maryan’s favourite moon bear, there was no competition but the next step to find an artist that could capture Jaspers’ likeness proved more difficult.
As Phil says, “No tattoo artist feature moon bears in their regular list of items, so I took a photo of Jasper to Classic Ink in Cleveleys, near Blackpool, where the artist cleverly fashioned a very realistic likeness on my upper arm. It hurt like crazy but it was well worth it. “
Phil has had a host of reaction to his tattoo but when he tells people about what the moon bears suffer, he says it usually leads to “gasps of horror and revulsion”. “Then when I mention Animals Asia and the good work they are doing to help the bears, they cheer up again, and go away, hopefully, just a bit better informed. I may get another tattoo, it depends if I can find another image as iconic as Jasper - and that won't be easy!”
