Our Hero Dog: Dr Scooby
|
This month’s hero dog is Dr Scooby, a member of the Hong Kong Dr Dog team. Scooby was an abandoned dog who was found, rescued and adopted by his wonderful guardian family – and named after the TV cartoon dog Scooby-Doo because of his friendly, helpful and slightly goofy character.
Soon after he was rescued, his family noticed that Scooby had a limp. A health check sadly revealed that Scooby had cancer and needed to have a leg amputated. Despite his disability, Scooby recovered well and has since become an exemplary Dr Dog, whose stoic and cheerful nature is a source of joy to everyone he visits.
As Joyce Cheng, Ward Manager of the Cancer Unit at Shatin Hospital says, “Dr Scooby has been very inspirational to many of our patients. Watching him cope with his problems helps them fight their own.” Scooby is a true hero – and his guardians are grateful for each day they get to spend with this happy, gentle dog.

Dr Dog welcomes new volunteers
|
Over 30 enthusiastic new volunteers attended the Hong Kong Dr Dog “Freshers” meeting in September to learn about the history of Animals Asia and the Dr Dog programme, and to take part in a lively Q&A session. The event was a fun opportunity for volunteers to get to know each other and find out more about the great work done by our doggie ambassadors and their guardians.

Encore for Otis meet and greet
|
Due to overwhelming response, a repeat Dr Dog meet and greet visit was organised for Otis staff at their Kowloon Bay office. At the popular “Lunchtime Relax Zone”, staff learned about the work and mission of the Dr Dog programme in Hong Kong and as you can see from this photo, our Dr Dogs enjoyed plenty of attention from the staff. Along with five other Dr Dogs, friendly Labrador Dr Wing Wing and his guardian Tony were also on hand to help demonstrate important basic obedience skills.

Baby addition to Dr Dog family |
Congratulations to Dr Dog volunteers Bonnie and Truman Wu who welcomed a new addition to their family, a beautiful baby boy named Walter. Walter joins the stellar Dr Dog family along with friendly golden retriever Dr Fat and little pug Dr Choi who are overjoyed to have a new baby brother. Both parents are firm believers that with proper guidance and training, dogs and babies can not only get along very well but also benefit from each other’s company.

Special thanks to a special volunteer
|
Animals Asia would like to say a big thank you to Alice Chan (left) for her long-term dedication and commitment to the Dr Dog programme in Hong Kong. Alice joined the Dr Dog programme as a guardian in 1995 and has made a huge contribution over the past 17 years. Her dedication to animals is also reflected in her family, which now numbers an impressive five Dr Dogs – Dr Candy, Dr Siu Mui, Dr Cherry, Dr Maisie and Dr Kelly – and two new bichon frise additions.

This July, Professor Paws was invited by animal welfare group SPCA(HK) to participate in the Guangzhou Primary and Middle School Student Summer Camp. With more than 400 students taking part, this was a great opportunity for our canine ambassadors to share their message of treating all animals with love and respect. All of the students were eager to learn how to look after dogs and especially thrilled to meet our friendly professors.

Doggie ambassadors attend Cat Carnival |
The Guangzhou Dr Dog team was invited to join the city’s first ever Cat Carnival in August. The two-day event was a great success, with local animal welfare groups and over 200,000 cat-lovers joining in the fun. Although our ambassadors were unable to take part in the cat “beauty contest”, they helped out at the Dr Dog painting table and did a wonderful job of introducing the Dr Dog programme. They also demonstrated their warm, affectionate, doggie characters – proving to everyone that cats, dogs and people can be the very best of friends.

Promoting love and respect
|
The Professor Paws team organised fun activities as a part of a summer educational course for children in Chengdu. The three-part course, which ran in August, included a “Care for life” presentation, a Q&A session and fun interaction with our furry Professor Paws volunteers. The children also made a colourful “wish tree” where they put their love for animals into words.

Bringing smiles in Bao’an
|
In September the Shenzhen Dr Dog team paid its first visit to the children at Bao’an Social Welfare Centre, many of whom are orphans or have disabilities. It was fantastic to see the smiles our canine doctors brought to their faces. One little girl in a wheelchair was especially happy to be able to help take our furry volunteer Dr Huang Huang for a walk.
