Welcome to Animals Asia’s US/Canadian e-newsletter
Dear Friend,

As August rolls on, I’m grinning from ear to ear with thoughts of how July ended! On the very last day of the month, another moon bear was rescued from the bile trade and found herself en route to a life of freedom at Animals Asia’s bear rescue center in Vietnam. Cat Ba is named after the coastal island where she was found and you can read her moving story here. Meanwhile, see below for more updates on our work in Asia and efforts to support that work coming from here in the States – and meet our newest team member, Ray Zhu, one of the people helping to end the bear bile trade and the suffering of thousands of bears like Cat Ba.

All the best,

Morgan Lance
US Director

Chinese city launches dog ownership course with Animals Asia
In June, a high-profile public event on “Responsible Dog Ownership” was held by the local authorities in Guangzhou, the third largest city in China, also known as the dog-and-cat-eating capital of the world. Organized by the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau (PSB) in partnership with Animals Asia, the event was held at the Tianhe District Huajing Primary School. This was the first such event held at a school and aimed specifically at children. Animals Asia delivered the course to children with four dogs from our Professor Paws program participating. Professor Paws, a school-based dog education program designed to show that dogs are friends, not food, saw its Guangzhou launch in 2008, having been running in Hong Kong since 2004.

Meet our volunteers: Jean Signore
Animals Asia supporter Jean Signore has lived on Long Island in the state of New York for her entire life, currently working at a local hospital and also with developmentally disabled individuals.  Jean began to attend Animals Asia events after learning of the plight of cats and dogs in Asia led her to seek a way to help. She recently dove in and coordinated her own fundraising event for Animals Asia, “Bowl for Bears… and Cats and Dogs” in Rockville Centre, New York. Says Jean, “I wanted to help out because I just can’t take the cruelty that is inflicted on so many animals. … I’ve decided to step forward and rally others to come out and make a difference in the lives of the suffering bears, and have some fun while doing it!”
Meet the team: Ray Zhu
Ray Zhu, Animals Asia’s US End Bear Farming Campaign Coordinator was born and raised in Sichuan province of China. Though now based in our San Francisco, CA office, Ray’s journey with Animals Asia began in China where he led the organization’s national PR and education efforts. He recently received his nonprofit MBA from Chaminade University of Honolulu in Hawaii. While there, he contributed crucial evidence to the passage of a law to ban the use and possession of bear bile and gallbladders within the state. Ray states that he has seen some “truly amazing changes” for the animals through the years he has spent working with Animals Asia and that he hopes, his efforts “can lead to some fundamental change….”
